Guide to Snowboarding

As outlined in the Guide to Skiing there are many similarities between skiing and snowboarding and this can make it difficult to decide which to take up.

If you are in a dilemma about which sport to participate in, remember you can learn either at a later date.

Since its introduction to the slopes in the 1960’s millions of people have taken up snowboarding and become addicted to the thrill of speeding down the mountain on one plank rather than two.

Boarders vs. Skiers
Skiing is still more popular than snowboarding but on most mountains you will see thousands of boarders mixed in with the skiers.

In the past there were some mild tensions between some skiers and some snowboarders that led some people to “choose sides” and never have a go at the other sport.

The tensions arose in the 1960’s when the grungy snowboarding community wanted to enjoy their sport on the slopes that had for decades been the domain of the traditionalist and conservative ski crowd.

Thankfully, now both sports are enjoyed by people for all backgrounds and there is little if any tension between boarders and skiers.

However, a few resorts still do not allow snowboarders on their slopes. For example, in the USA there are three resorts that prohibit the use of snowboards: Deer Valley and Alta in Utah, and Mad River Glen in Vermont.

Although boarder-free resorts are now very much in the minority, you should always check the resort you are visiting allows boarders.

There's no doubt that snowboarding is cool!

The clothes, the lingo, and the surfing heritage behind the sport are a lifestyle for many.

However, if you are more of an internet surfer than a big-wave surfer, don't worry!

One of the great things about skiing and snowboarding is that you get to ride the mountains with people from all different backgrounds and abilities.

Skiing is just as cool as snowboarding so don’t get hung up on image.

The main thing is to have fun and enjoy the mountains.

The ups and downs of snowboarding
Many people find they can pick up snowboarding fairly easily and they are surprised at how quickly they can progress.

However, most people find that during the first few lessons a lot of time is spent getting up from the snow! If you persevere though you will find that everything soon clicks into place and you will be spending much more time upright!

The key thing is to invest in lessons and think about some protective clothing such as wrist guards and impact shorts so when you do take a tumble you are well protected.

If you are confused about which sport to take up why not take a day out of your first holiday to give the other sport a go?

Whichever sport you choose you are sure to have a great time. So don’t worry too much and just enjoy riding in the mountains.
